Bernard Devert created Habitat et Humanisme in 1985. This movement focuses on housing low-income families, especially those localized in “balanced” neighborhoods to promote social diversity in the cities’ heart. From the beginning, Habitat et Humanisme was not designed as a charity but as a social enterprise, reconciling economic factors with social goals and humans with urban environments. By using private investors gathered in SCI, the first housing was acquired. 30 years later, the same dynamic of innovation and social entrepreneurship still define the movement. Alongside the organization and development of Habitat et Humanisme, Bernard Devert spent 13 years as chaplain of the anti-cancer center Léon-Bérard in Lyon.
